Statesville Police Department Clarifies Misinformation Regarding Relief Workers
October 29, 2024 - Statesville, NC — In response to recent reports from a local social media agency, the Statesville Police Department is addressing public concerns about alleged “suspicious activity” at the Ramada by Wyndham in Statesville. The agency reported yesterday that “multiple citizens observed hundreds of individuals of Hispanic descent coming and going in dozens of white and black vans with Texas license plates.” We confirm that the agency reached out to Statesville Police Chief David Onley for clarification but did not receive a response.
While Chief Onley did not issue a statement at that time, two officers with the Statesville Police Department did respond to unrelated calls regarding suspicious activity at the Ramada Inn around 11:30 a.m. on October 28, 2024. Upon investigation, hotel staff confirmed that guests were simply checking out as scheduled, with no irregularities reported. The Statesville Police Department has since confirmed that these guests were relief workers who had been staying at the hotel for the past 30 days to support disaster recovery efforts in Western North Carolina following Hurricane Helene.
A representative from the Ramada by Wyndham Statesville highlighted her dedication to maintaining a safe and inclusive environment: “Our commitment is to provide a safe and welcoming space for all guests, including the relief workers supporting Western North Carolina’s recovery from Hurricane Helene. Recent allegations claiming that some of our guests are here illegally are entirely baseless and do not represent our values. We are proud to support those aiding in disaster recovery, and we encourage our community to join us in embracing these efforts to rebuild and support those in need.”
Chief David Onley also emphasized the importance of sharing accurate information and avoiding assumptions that may disrupt the community’s unity and safety. “Our department takes all community concerns seriously and investigates reports thoroughly to ensure public safety. However, misinformation and speculation can lead to unnecessary fear and tension. We encourage the public to seek facts and remain supportive of those who are helping communities in need. The guests at the Ramada were here legally, providing vital assistance in the region’s hurricane recovery efforts. Let us continue to show respect and gratitude to all who contribute to our collective well-being.”
The Statesville Police Department appreciates the cooperation and understanding of the community as they continue to focus on public safety and accuracy in communication. Residents are encouraged to report concerns directly to the department or through official city channels.
