Live Theater Finds Their Permanent Home in Statesville
by Candace Lagerhausen
Formerly known as the Statesville Community Theatre, Theatre Statesville has been around since 1958. As the only live theater for adults in the county, Theatre Statesville’s mission is, “to bring live theatre to families and friends in Iredell County”, says Sharon Sigler, Artistic Director at Theatre Statesville. Sharon, who formerly taught elementary school drama, says, “I think that theater is a wonderful vehicle to instill confidence and teach children a different set of skills that they don’t get in school”. Chad Schuermeyer, who currently teaches elementary drama adds, “It’s finding ways to share, to be able to interact and talk with each other and to put yourself in someone else’s shoes”.
Theatre Statesville shared exciting news that they would be turning their location at 224 N. Center Street into a black box theater. “We have been trying to figure out how to get some sort of permanent home”, Sharon said, adding, “it gives us more of an opportunity for even a small comedy or small musical”. While the new theater won’t be the venue for large musicals, it will hold 75-100 people, and will be used for smaller dramas and productions.
